The School of Foreign Languages sets two undergraduate specialties respectively Business English and English, and the latter contains three branches namely English-Japanese, English-French and English Education. There are 933 undergraduates and 76 full-time teachers, including 6 professors, 15 associate professors and 5 foreign teachers. To cultivate the students’ application ability, the school offers advanced teaching facilities to students, such as language laboratories, self-study centers, simultaneous interpretation rooms and computer aided translation (CAT). In order to ensure smooth employment for students, the school establishes long-term 30 practical training bases by cooperating with well-known enterprises including China HP Co, Ltd. and Transn Co., Ltd.
The School of Foreign Languages pays attention to the cultivation of students' foreign language foundation and language application ability. Students have a solid professional foundation with the passing rates of both TEM-4 and TEM-8 13 percent higher than the national average and 26 percent higher than that of similar institutions in the past 3 years. The school places great emphasis on students’ practical ability. Many students have been awarded prizes in some major contests, such as China Interpreting Contest, English BP Debating Contest and FLTRP Cup English Writing and Reading Contest. Students obtain Shanghai Intermediate and Advanced Interpretation Certificates, Cambridge business English Certificate and other professional qualification certificates at a high rate.
The average employment rate of graduates over the past 3 years has reached 95%. Besides, many graduates are employed by Apple Inc., IBM, China Southern Airlines Company Limited, ICBC, China Merchants Group, HP, Trans Company, XDF, etc., and are highly praised by their employers. Meanwhile, the average enrollment rate of postgraduates is 16%, with a lot of students admitted into the graduate schools of well-known universities at home and abroad such as Beijing Foreign studies University, Beijing Language and Culture University, Wuhan University, University of London, University of Sydney, Durham University, etc.
Major courses: Basic English, Advanced English, Cambridge Business English, Business English Listening and Speaking, Business English Writing, Business Translation, International Trade Practice, Business Etiquette, International Commercial Law, Electronic Commerce, International Business Negotiation, etc.
This major aims to serve the “One Belt and One Road” national strategy, focusing on students’ ability of business management and their skills in international business practices. Students enjoy broader employment prospect, involving foreign trade, international affairs, publication, translation, financial service, travelling and etc.
English (English education)
Major courses: Basic English, Advanced English, English Audio-visual Speaking, English Writing, Educational Psychology, British and American Literature, Theories and Methods of English Teaching, English Teaching Design, etc.
This specialty is characterized by the cultivation of English teaching ability. After graduation, students can be engaged in English teaching and education management in primary and secondary schools, bilingual kindergartens and various educational and training institutions.
English (English and Japanese bilingualism)
Major courses: Basic English, Advanced English, English Audio-visual Speaking, Japanese Reading and Writing, Japanese Audio-visual Speaking, General Situation of Japan, Cambridge Business English (middle rank) and E-commerce Foundation, etc.
The specialty aims to cultivate students’ solid bilingual application ability in both English and Japanese, and equip students with business expertise, relevant bilingual competence certificates and internship opportunities in Japan. After graduation, students have broader employment prospect in foreign trade, international affairs, publication, translation, tourism, civil service and etc.
English (English and French bilingualism)
Major courses: Basic English, Advanced English, English Audio-visual Speaking, French Reading and Writing, French Audio-visual Speaking, General Situation of France, Translation Theories and Techniques, Advanced Interpretation and so on.
The specialty focuses on the cultivation of students’ solid bilingual competence in both English and French, and cultivates students to have translation expertise. After graduation, students have a priority to participate in the project of “International Engineering Translation” in Transn Co., Ltd., one of the top 100 Asia companies, which help them have a favorable advantage in overseas job market as bilingual engineering translator. Meanwhile, they also enjoy broader employment prospect in foreign trade, international affairs, publication, translation, tourism, civil service and etc.
